In English, this sentence could be written: I gave the book to Rita. The book is the direct object (the thing which is being given) and Rita the indirect object (the person to whom the thing is given). Verbs may have two objects, one being the direct object and the other the indirect object for example: Rita is the direct object of the verb to see.
